The Mysterious Eight-Thousander
Manaslu

23. August – 06. October 2013 / 45 days

Leitung: offen

The name «Manaslu» is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa roughly translated as «Mountain of the Spirit». The Japanese made the first successful ascent in 1956 on the Northeast face; this is considered the normal route nowadays. In 1971 Japanese were also responsible for the 2nd successful attempt, this time on the difficult Northwest spur and finally in 1974 the first all-female expedition was successful on an 8000m. mountain, Japanese again! The Japanese were obviously drawn to the magic of this mountain! Nevertheless, in 1981 a German/Swiss expedition was successful in the attempt to ski down from 8125m.

  • Manaslu is located in the Central Himalaya between Annapurna and Ganesh Himal. Although it is technically one of the easiest 8000m-mountains, it is relatively less popular than the other eight-thousanders and therefore fairly quiet.
  • The local people believe the summit belongs to the Kingdom of the God Kambung and only humble mountaineers are allowed to trespass, otherwise weather changes, avalanches and icefalls will be their punishment.
  • We will trek along the wildly romantic Buri Gandaki Valley with its traditional villages.
  • If we complete our ascent in good time, we can choose to walk through the beautiful woods to Pokhara.
  • Kobler & Partner have sucessfully climbed Manaslu several times.
