Our journey takes us via Kathmandu
Cho Oyu, KTM

07. April – 26. May 2013 / 50 days

Leitung: offen

Cho Oyu or Qowowuyag means «goddess of turquoise» in Tibetan. The name assumedly is a compound of the Tibetan words chomo (goddess) and yo (turquoise) and refers to the turquoise glow of the summit in the afternoon light, which is visible from Tibet. Cho Oyu is situated in the Central Himalaya, only 20 km to the west of Mt. Everest, and is the western cornerstone of the Mahalangur Himal in the main chain of the Himalaya. The borderline between China and Nepal runs right across its summit. This border has been argued about for a long time and before the turn of the century, the Chinese government made it clear to all mountaineers that the normal route of the Cho Oyo is only to be accessed via Tibet.

  • Journey-in and journey back via Kathmandu, Zangmu (Tibet) and Nyalam to base camp.
  • On journey-in, we will quickly ascend to a high altitude, which must not be underestimated.
  • Base camp is situated near the Nangpa La, one of the most popular and oldest trading routes in the Himalaya.
  • The technical difficulties are moderate; therefore, the mountain can be climbed by many people. However, being over 8000m in height, Cho Oyu is not to be underestimated!
  • Positive: the weather is much more stable in Tibet than in Nepal or Pakistan.
  • On this journey, fewer sherpa will accompany us, but we will have more time on the mountain than on other Cho Oyu expeditions.
  • It’s good to know we have made many successful ascents on this mountain.
